“Northwest Seafood Seasoning” by the Pike Place Fish Market
I received my fish order from the Pike Place Fish Market yesterday and tried the Northwest Seafood Seasoning for the first time. Our home filled with the scent of fresh seafood and I felt like I had been transported to a fisherman’s wharf!
This seasoning is described as “all-purpose” and on the label it recommends adding this seasoning to flour and dredging your fish in it before pan-frying the fish. I just used the seasoning liberally on some swordfish and pan-fried the fish in butter and olive oil (I will be posting my technique for preparing the fish simple as it was very soon). The ingredients on the label are as follows:
“Celery seed, dill, garlic, lemon, onion, pepper, salt, and spices.”
This seasoning mix is bright colored and fresh and I highly recommend it for any type of seafood. At $5.99 plus shipping you can turn your meal into a fantastic one with this seasoning. I will be stocking up on this seasoning. If you want to order some here is the web address:

Pruneti selezione Viuzzo olive oil 2018/2019 harvest

I just purchased Pruneti selezione Viuzzo an olive oil by the producer Frantoio Prunetifrom Tuscany, Italy. According to Olive Oil Lovers where I purchased the oil it is an organic blend made with Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo olives and has the following notes: artichoke, grass, radish, tomato leaves, green apple and fresh almond. Additionally, this oil is described as being “lightly spicy on the tongue with a green pepper sensation and an unmistakable black pepper finish.” These are the recommended food pairings: Raw Vegetables, Roasted/Grilled Vegetables, Red Meat, Aged Cheese, Soups & Stews.
Now for my olive oil tasting (keeping in mind I am just an ordinary person who loves olive oil)! I poured 1 tablespoon of the oil into a wine glass and gave the glass a swirl taking a deep inhale in. The olive oil has a definite scent of citrus. After taking a big slurp of the oil (with some Pecorino cheese on hand to eat just after the tasting) I tasted the following notes: very spicy, and possibly radish. I tried hard to taste the other notes but alas could not… After having some pecorino cheese and then tasting the oil again, the spiciness diminished. In addition to cheese, I think it would be a good bet to try this olive oil with some roasted vegetables as recommended, possibly fennel.
Where to purchase: I purchased this oil from the Olive Oil Lovers website and it is also currently sold by the same company on Amazon. My personal experience with ordering olive oil from this company is they are reliable and package the oil well.
As far as I can tell this oil has not won any recent international awards but the Frantoio oil from this producer has just won the 2019 Silver award at the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition. I can’t wait to try this one next so stay tuned!
Review of Rincon De La Subbetica Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Andalusia, Spain
With so many options for olive oil online and on store shelves, I recently came to the realization I didn’t really know if I was buying good olive oil or not. Olive oil is like wine in that there are so many varieties and without a guide you really don’t know what you are getting. I began searching for a guide and found the Official Index for the World’s Best Olive Oils from the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition which is held every year in New York. Once I started using this index, I was able to verify what I was getting was indeed good olive oil and found exceptional olive oils using this resource. Not all of the oils from the competition are available, but on the NYIOOC website there is an online marketplace which connects you with a vendor in the U.S. where you can buy the respective oils that are offered. I also like to use Olive Oil Lovers as my personal experience with this company is that it is reliable to deliver what is ordered intact and if something has spilled, once they learn of the issue, they send a replacement right away!
Recently I have been impressed with the richness of flavor offered by olive oils from Spain and decided to try Rincon De La Subbetica Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Andalusia, Spainby the company Almazaras de la Subbetica. This olive oil recently won a 2018 gold award at the 2018 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition as well as being described as “one of the best organic olive oils in the world” so I had to try it! This olive oil is made from 100% Hojiblanco olives and is described as having an “intense, green aroma reminiscent of fruit and citrus” with flavors of “green almond, before becoming bitter and spicy on the palate.” A person may also taste the following flavors: artichoke, herbs, tomato leaf, and eucalyptus.
Now for my olive oil tasting (keeping in mind I am just an ordinary person who loves olive oil)! I poured 1 tablespoon of the oil into a wine glass and gave the glass a swirl taking a deep inhale in. Oh wow the oil does have a nice citrusy scent possibly lemons! Definitely Lemons! After taking a big slurp of the oil (this is intense I have never slurped oil before! Note: if you try this I strongly recommend some bread or something after the slurping), I tasted the following: herbs, possibly some artichoke and the spiciness and bitterness of the oil. Delicious!
I haven’t tried the oil with the recommended pairing of sautéed peas but as it is springtime, I will be serving this oil with some smashed peas very soon! Give this oil a try if you can and see what you taste!

Passionfruit from Miami Fruit
I wanted to do this review of the passionfruit I ordered from Miami Fruit because I am so happy about having fresh and delicious passionfruit delivered to my door in Colorado! Unless you live in an area where passionfruit is grown or live in a big city, you are unlikely to find much passionfruit in the store, so I was excited to find the company Miami Fruit which grows and ships all kinds of tropical fruit. According to Miami Fruit, they ship the fruit within 24 hours of being picked. The fruit arrived very fresh and is the sweetest passionfruit I have ever tasted. Purple passionfruit is the smallest variety of passionfruit but has a richer aroma and is the most flavorful. According to Miami Fruit ripening guide, the passionfruit are ready to eat when they are wrinkly with dimples. You will find the browner and more wrinkled the passionfruit, the riper and more delicious it is. Once you cut open the fruit, the edible pulp and seeds inside have an amazing aroma that is fruity and floral and tastes similar to a mango or an orange and is tart with some sweetness. The interior is yellow or greenish with pulp and black seeds that are edible. If you choose to eat the seeds, you will find the seeds have a light crunch.
Passionfruit has many nutritional benefits including a high potassium content, B vitamins, vitamin C, and fiber.
There are so many ways to enjoy fresh passionfruit. If you want to eat it plain, just rinse the fruit, cut it in half and scoop out the seeds and pulp with a spoon. There are many other amazing ways to enjoy passionfruit including adding it to tea, plain yogurt, smoothies, mixing it with fresh squeezed orange juice, as a topper for granola, and added to deserts.
If you want to freeze passionfruit so you have some on hand for later, just wash them and cut them in half and scoop out the pulp and seeds into an ice cube tray. Once the passionfruit cubes are frozen, remove them from the ice cube tray and place them in a freezer bag.
Please try this passionfruit smoothie recipe as it is possibly the best smoothie I have tasted yet! This recipe pairs sweeter fruits with passionfruit balancing out the tartness of the passionfruit.
Serves: 2 adults
- 8 passionfruit (not the outside just the pulp and seeds from the inside)
- 4 frozen bananas
- 2 dates pitted
- 1 cup light coconut milk
- ¼ – ½ cups ice if your bananas aren’t frozen or you want the smoothie very cold
Wash and cut the passionfruit in half and scoop out the seeds and pulp. Peel your frozen bananas (I use a knife to cut the peel off). Add the passionfruit seeds and pulp, frozen bananas, dates, coconut milk and optional ice to your blender and blend well. Spoon some unblended passionfruit on top if you like and serve immediately.
